What is Open Guest Period?

During the Open Guest Period, Claggett will offer lodging and meals in a “vacation rental” format for individuals, couples, and families seeking a summer getaway. Overnight stays are available for 1-3 nights.

Guests are invited to enjoy Claggett’s natural scenery and recreation in a self-guided environment, including hiking, canoeing and kayaking, swimming, fishing, biking, yard games, and general relaxation. In order to provide a safe and healthy environment for all, we will limit the number of accommodations available and provide a system for reserving activities.

Experience & Activities

Open Guest Period

Our 268-acre campus, normally the site of camp and group retreats, is perfectly designed to host small, household gatherings. Come play, explore or simply relax with your loved ones.

Following guidelines established by local government officials, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Camp Association (ACA), we have the expertise to offer the following self-guided activities for you to enjoy:

  • Swimming in the pool
  • Canoeing or fishing on the Monocacy River
  • Relax and read a book
  • Hiking throughout the 268-acre campus and nearby Sugarloaf Mountain
  • Play basketball, kickball, or volleyball
  • Bring or borrow a bicycle to ride around the campus
  • Make s’mores at campfire [Saturdays starting at 7 pm]
  • Walk the labyrinth

Social distancing guidelines must be followed at all times in the shared outdoor spaces, like the swimming pool, hiking trails, and recreation courts. Face coverings are required when social distancing cannot be maintained outdoors.

We recommend bringing your own activity and recreation equipment:

  • life jacket if you wish to boat/kayak
  • sports equipment
  • fishing poles (license required for ages 16+)
  • bikes/helmets
  • sunscreen/bug spray
  • reusable water bottles
  • pool towels, chairs, and toys
  • arts and crafts supplies

Accomodations & Meals

Each household unit will have a private space in either their own cottage or one of the hotel-style rooms in the Christianne Inn.

Meals begin with dinner on Thursday and conclude with lunch on Monday. Our food service team will provide individually packaged, single-serve meals in our dining hall. Household units will be assigned a designated table during their stay. Meals may be taken outside the dining hall for outdoor enjoyment. Face coverings must be worn when entering, exiting, and using the common bathrooms in the dining hall.

Health & Safety

Along with the CDC and ACA, we will adhere to Frederick County guidelines in place at the time of participation. Please visit our COVID-19 FAQ page to learn more about policies and procedures in place to maintain the health and safety of guests and staff.

Guests are responsible for supervising their children at all times; no exceptions. Additionally, healthcare is not provided. Guests should bring a small first aid kit/supplies.

Each household unit will stay in an assigned cottage or private room in the Christiane Inn. Bed linens and bath towels will be provided. Public areas and equipment will be cleaned and sanitized regularly. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the campus. Guests will be required to wear a face covering while indoors in a public space (except when eating) or when 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained outdoors.

Individuals and household units will be asked to complete pre-screening prior to their visit and agree to a community covenant during their stay.

Additional Questions

How many people can participate during each Open Guest Period? We have currently capped our total capacity to 75 guests to allow for the necessary space to fully experience our activities while maintaining social distancing.

What is considered a “household unit?” We consider a household unit a group of 10 or less who have been cohabitating and come to Claggett with the intention to stay physically distant from other groups. We understand that this family unit may extend beyond traditional family units.

How are participants and staff being screened for Covid-19? We ask guests to do temperature checks for the 14 days prior to arrival. If anyone in your family exhibits symptoms of Covid-19 or is exposed to anyone that tests positive for Covid-19, within 14 days prior to your visit, we ask that you contact us and refrain from attending.

What is the registration and refund policy? Registration is open until midnight the Monday before the Open Guest Period begins.

If the Open Guest Period is cancelled for any reason, a full refund will be issued to all participants. If we have an insignificant number of reservations or the guidelines for Frederick County, MD change, we reserve the right to cancel. If a family member develops COVID-19 symptoms before their planned attendance date, please contact us immediately to cancel and a full refund will be issued. If your family needs to cancel their participation for any other reason, cancellation must be submitted by midnight the Monday prior to a Thursday arrival in order to receive a refund.

What should I bring? In addition to warm weather clothing (and a sweatshirt in case it gets cold at night), pool towels and suits, guests are free to bring any specialized active gear, bikes, roller skates, yoga mats, yard and board games. If you are bringing young ones, please bring a Pack ‘n Play, toys, etc.

Can I share a cabin with friends or include friends of my children? We know you love your friends and we all miss these deep connections, but for health purposes, we can only allow one household unit per cottage or Inn room. For purposes of Open Guest Period, please consider a household unit as those individuals that have been living together in the same home prior to arrival. That being said, we do hope that you encourage friends and extended family to also register for Open Guest Period for the same time period to allow for socially distanced time together.
