MISSION & VISION
Regenerate nature, community, and spirit.
The Claggett Center’s mission is, and has been for almost 75 years, regeneration. Regenerate is an old theological term meaning spiritual rebirth, biological regrowth, and community renewal. Modern farmers describe practices that enhance soil quality and build community as regenerative ones.
“Regenerate” names that mystery pulsating in the heart of Christian belief and practice. This word describes who we are, what we do, and who we hope to become on these 268 acres of farm and forest along the Monocacy River. We help renew the experience of being alive and connected in this world.
Our regenerative mission grows out of the soil of John’s gospel. The Evangelist equates the Logos of God with life and the experience of being alive. Life, he says, is the divine light that illumines all things. Jesus imagined a way of life in which all living things are free and flourishing—he called it the Kingdom of God, or what we might call, “The Commonwealth of Life.” One enters that Way of Life through a disciplined, intentional practice of spiritual formation.
From this incarnational taproot come our three guiding theological ideas here at the Claggett Center and their corresponding areas of practice:
Life is the expression of the Divine within the cosmos. (Logos)
We regenerate nature.
To be alive is to be in relationship. (Trinity)
We regenerate community.
Being alive is a spiritual experience. (Incarnation)
We regenerate individual and collective spirituality.
